The Funny 25 is not computed by summing all requests for all songs for the year. Rather, it is computed from the Funny 5s via a point system: 5 points for each #1, 4 points for #2, etc. Funny 5's which are "special" such as "top car songs of all time" or "top dog songs of all time" are not included in the Funny 25 calculation. This does not exclude the all-Christmas Funny 5's in December from Funny 25 calculations, unless they are presented as "top Christmas songs of all time" or something similar.
The Funny 5 is largely based on phone, postal mail, and internet requests. It is also influenced by timeliness, album sales, and Billboard charts. In the end, it is simply Dr. Demento's judgement of the hottest and the coolest, no more, no less.
(Note that the syndicated Funny 25 is based on the Funny 5s that were aired in syndication and the live Funny 25 in L.A. is based on the Funny 5s heard there over the course of the year. Therefore, there are always differences between the two countdowns.)
