WARNING: the bonus tracks this week are what we might call an Anti-Christmas show...songs that are not in what's usually called the Christmas spirit, and are absolutely not recommended for children...but you've told us how much you love these songs that we mostly can't play on radio, so here they are. THANKSGIVING 0947: Here's our Happy Thanksgiving show for 2009. We celebrate the consumption of turkey and other festive foods...but we also remember that other meaning of the word "turkey" to denote a movie, play or song that is extremely bad. To that end, we bring back this week the Audio Torture Chamber, a feature some listeners might remember from the 1980s. We visit the Chamber at the end of each segment (except the last one). Notable among the bonus tracks is "Turkish Delight," a 1932 British comedy record spoofing the cultural traditions of Baghdad and other Middle Eastern localities. (Warning: politically incorrect). MARIJUANA 0946: Our topic this week is marijuana. We've never made the evil weed a main topic before -- it's still illegal, after all -- but there are thousands of songs about it. We're only scratching the surface, but here's a nice little survey of the best of the more humorous marijuana melodies. The bonus tracks include some rare gems from the 1930s. (As is our custom, the first two segments offer a variety of new and old funny songs on other subjects). Nov 15, 2009

FANTASY TOP 25 0945: Something we haven't tried before this week...we present a "fantasy countdown" compiled by listener Steve Szeli of Newburgh, NY. This is essentially a countdown of Steve's favorite demented songs. It contains a nice mix of classic Demented hits with some items not heard all that often. We hope to present more "fantasy countdowns" on an occasional basis in the future, and we invite you to send your list! (Use the "request a song" feature at www.drdemento.com). The "bonus tracks" are some deserving new songs we somehow haven't been able to fit into the regular show. There are a couple of naughty words here and there. Nov 8, 2009

TOP TEN 0944: Here's our Top Ten show for October 2009. This show also has our more or less annual salute to hunting, and three memorial tributes (Vic Mizzy, Capt. Lou Albano, and Soupy Sales) which is sad but also lots of fun. The Bonus Tracks include some real rarities...Jimmie Cross' rarely heard followup to "I Want My Baby Back," early efforts from Ray Stevens and Sly Stone (one of the Stewart Brothers) - each of these artists made records for almost a decade before finding real success - and an alternate version of Captain Lou Albano's rousing theme song. LABOR DAY 0936: Labor Day was invented in the late 19th century as a way for the US government to show American workers (especially union members) that the government loved and respected them. Nowadays most Americans mostly think of Labor Day as the last barbecue of summer, but there are a whole lot of great and funny songs about working, and we can't think of a better time to play them. Sure beats actually working! The bonus tracks have some entertaining, rare and historical songs and comedy bits about labor unions, including Pete Seeger at age 21 (with the Almanac Singers), plus Carlton the Doorman. D-POD SHUFFLE 0928: By popular demand, here's another "D-Pod Shuffle" show, where I let my computer pick songs at random. Instead of the logical thought progressions and harmonious segues that I normally take pride in, this one takes us all over the place. New, old, loud, soft, nice, nasty, profound, stoopid, whatever! Great fun! Don't miss "Star Trek-A-Polka," which hasn't been heard for over 20 years. MOTHER'S DAY 0919: Here's our Demented salute to Mother's Day 2009. Recommended for mothers with a keen sense of humor, and anyone else who'd like to explore the rich veins of comedy inspired by the universal condition of motherhood, and all its psychological impilcations and complications. Our bonus for this show is a 1973 interview with Frank Zappa, in which he introduced The Shaggs for the first time, talked about his early (pre-Mothers) recordings, and also played some cherished 1950s R&B items. We have a special tribute to the late Alan Livingston, who signed the Beatles to Capitol Records and revitalized Frank Sinatra's career...but we focus on his contributions to the Golden Era of children's records, 1946-52, when among other things he invented the character of Bozo the Clown, and co-wrote "I Taut I Taw A Puddy Tat." Our bonus segment features three multi-part Golden Era kids' records, running about 12 minutes each. RADIO 0910: Our subject this week is Radio...songs and comedy bits about radio from various eras, especially from the original heyday of radio in the 1920s, and the heyday of Top 40 in the 1950s (and the payola scandal that followed). SHORT SONGS 0907: Every three years or so Dr. Demento gathers up some of the shortest songs in his archives. This time, as in 2005, he sequences them so that they get shorter and shorter as the show progresses, for an exhilarating rush to brevity. The opening song, Steve Martin's new "Late For School," has nothing to do with that. Neither does the online-only bonus segment, dedicated to Tiny Tim, and featuring a funny and revealing interview with Minnesota radio personality T. D. Mischke. Much of the interview is devoted to Tiny's unique approach to personal hygiene. (We'd rate it somewhere around PG-13). Feb 15, 2009

CHRISTMAS #1 0848: And awaaaay we go with our first Christmas spectacular for 2008. New and inspired songs, old and desired songs, stacks & stacks of 'em piled up every which way under our virtual radio Christmas tree. Everything we love about Christmas, and everything we hate, it's all here, and so is the Top Ten for November. I want to especially point out our x-rated, yes, that's X-RATED bonus segment, filled with some of the most outrageously irreverent holiday songs ever made! Be forewarned...lots of four-letter words and generally disgusting grossness. We've put it at the very end of our stream, making it easier for parents and others not inclined to listen to such things to turn it off without missing such gems as "An Axl Christmas" (in honor of the long-delayed Guns 'n Roses album), "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" and "Kung Pao Buckaroo Holiday" (an ode to political incorrectness). FRANK ZAPPA 0846: This week's show is entirely devoted to a tribute to Frank Zappa, commemorating the 15th anniversary of his death. It traces his career in roughly chronological fashion, concentrating on his humorous music but also exploring his R&B roots, and the avant-garde music which he considered to be his best work. Many interview excerpts from Frank's appearances on the Dr. Demento Show are included. This is not a repeat of our 1994 tribute show; it is newly written and produced. The online bonus segment comes at the end this time, and is much longer than usual (about 33 minutes). It features Frank introducing rare records from his personal collection, and also three Zappa favorites we can't play on the radio. TOP TEN 0839: Our online only "Rarities By Requests" set is worth your special attention this week. "A Tale of the Ticker," one of the few truly amusing songs about the stock market, was recorded in September 1929 just before the s**t in the fan for the biggest Wall Street dump of all time (so far!) Also featured is that timeless epic of backwoods automotive seduction, "Larry, Move Your Hand" and a primer on averting DWI problems, "Backwards XYZ's". BEATLES 0838: We salute the Beatles this week, with some of the best (and worst) of the dozens of topical songs written about the group during its glorious heyday. We've also got a couple of Sarah Palin songs (more to come, we imagine)...and such hard to find Demented favorites as "The Bears," "Rappin' Duke" and "Oh Boy Do I Love Bears" along with (for the first time on the show) "This Is Planet Earth" by Jerry Samuels (aka Napoleon XIV). ONE-HIT WONDERS 0837: We salute One-Hit Wonders this week. A One-Hit Wonder is an artist who has great success with one song, then never has another hit worth reckoning with. In the 1950s and 1960s there were a great many one-hit wonders. Thatalso happened to be the Golden Age of Novelty Records, and we salute many of those. Toward the end of the show we also salute artists who had a single song place high on one or more of the Dr. Demento Show's year-end countdowns, but never enjoyed a followup hit. In the early part of the show we salute Talk Like a Pirate Day (Sept. 17), and tip our top hat to the late Jerry Reed. Sep 14, 2008

Non-football rarities include radio personality Don Imus' first record, from 1971, a 1950s track by Milwaukee legend Mad Man Michaels, and "The Old Sow Song" from 1937 complete with gloriously unprintable mouth noises. TOP TEN 0835: Here's our Top Ten for August 2008...and since Sept.1 falls on a Monday, it's Labor Day weekend too. This show features several all-time Labor Day favorites, including "The Bricklayer's Story" and "Working Where the Sun Don't Shine" (the colo-rectal surgeon's song). We also salute the man who works the hardest on Labor Day, Mr. Jerry Lewis...we have a short interview with Mike Elliott, whose 1986 Demented hit "Rock Me Jerry Lewis" is the ultimate telethon tribute. We also spin a very rare and hilarious Martin Mull item, and say a fond goodbye to "Engineer Bill" Stulla, who died this week at age 97. Aug 31, 2008

LIVE IN STUDIO 0829: An extra-special show this week: Every song in the second hour of the show was recorded live on the Dr Demento Show, between the mid-1970s and the mid-2000's. Many of these performances haven't been heard since their original broadcast years ago. Tom Stankus' "Existential Blues" is especially exciting, with lots of elements not heard on the currently available recorded version (including those "Impossible Dream" lines). Along with the familiar September 1980 version of "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Another One Rides The Bus," online listeners (only) can hear Al's encore performance from April 1981...like "Existential Blues," this performance also has some extra added attractions. The first half of the show features, among other things, a virtually brand new Dickie Goodman production (!) Jul 20, 2008

CHRISTMAS #4 0751: Here's the grand finale to our 2007 holiday celebration. As is our tradition we favor the old favorites this time - "Christmas Dragnet," "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth," "The Pretty Little Dolly" - but there's also new holiday hilarity, including 2007's most-noticed new novelty Christmas release (The Dan Band), an all-new Bohemian Christmas Rhapsody (not the same one we heard last year), and Santa Claus appearing in the form of a cow (thanks to NorDakota's Mylo Hatzenbuhler). Granny gets all lit up on fruitcake brandy, though...and then there's that dose of acid, and the hippopotamus, and the sex toys...Just another Christmas in the land of Dementia, with lots of rare items you won't find anywhere else. Several sought-after rarities in this show - "Blue Christmas" with Seymour Swine, "Here Comes Santa" by Victor Banana, "Merry Christmas You Suckers" by Paddy Roberts...and "Ding! CHRISTMAS/HANUKKAH #1 0748: Here we go with Number One of our four holiday specials for 2007. We've got songs for Hanukkah (and Chanukah too) and lots of thoroughly crazed Christmas carols, old and new. (We think "F**K Christmas," as edited by Dr. D., is even funnier than the unbleeped original). "Showdown At The North Pole" should arouse some interesting conversations...the conflict is Jesus vs. Santa Claus. *ALSO* This show is now in improved quality for both members and non-members! ALL-TIME Greats 0725 :Among the greatest novelty record artists of all time, Stan Freberg made his mark in the 1950s with devastating spoofs of rock 'n roll music. After that he moved on to other things, but fans have never stopped wishing Stan would use his comic genius to lampoon later pop music trends. Now, The Great Luke Ski, devoted hip-hop historian and a superb parodist in his own right, has created his own Freberg-style skewering of rap music in his ten-minute sketch called "MC Freberg." This show also features a half hour of songs about God. No evangelism here, and no disrespect either...just one brilliant comedy song or sketch after another, each using the name of God in the title in its own way. Jun 24, 2007

STUPIDITY 0710: In 1956, a television legend got together with two of that era's greatest radio stars to make what turned out to be one of the worst novelty records of all time. "The Space Man" flies again on this Dr. Demento show! Our main topic this week is stupidity, and we'll have a couple of really stupid songs (including the one that's sweeping Canada like a curling broom, "Liquor and Whores")...but mostly these are hilarious songs about stupidity, from "If I Only Had A Brain" to the one about "Duhbya." How sweet to be an idiot! Mar 11, 2007

We'll also hear rare tracks like "The Thorazine Shuffle," Benny Bell's "Humoresque" (the song about goosing statues in the park) and "My Name Is Puka." Mar 4, 2007

Our subject this week is the blues...the demented blues. The funny blues. There's more of that than you might think...from such certifiably funny folks as "Weird Al" Yankovic, Henry Phillips, and Martin Mull...not to mention Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Other highlights include a stack of songs about cloning (no, they aren't all alike) and "Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron" by the Royal Guardsmen, together with the Royal Guardsmen's new sequel, recorded forty years later! Jan 28, 2007

Just as surely as December leads into January, holiday feasting leads to dieting (at least for a lot of us!) This week's feature segments explore the ins and outs of dieting with comedic gems like "Too Fat Polka," "Weird Al" Yankovic's "Eat It" and "Fat" and 400-lb. actor Victor Buono's "Fat Man's Prayer." Also included: brand new songs by Worm Quartet and The Four Postmen, and the grand finale for Mr. Whitekeys and the Fabulous Spamtones. Jan 21, 2007

CHRISTMAS 06 #4: It's our final Christmas show of 2006, and I think you'll agree we saved the best for last! Brand new demented discs mix with some of our most cherished Christmas oldies. "How Did This Thing Get In Me" by Mary & The Magi is the most imaginative and colorful (and, likely, accurate) new version of the original Christmas story I've heard in years. "Santa's EMail From Nigeria" by Dr. Elmo is another dandy new wrinkle. You'll chuckle at two (almost) forgotten 1950s knockoffs of the Chipmunk Song, not to mention Canned Heat's rare 1968 collaboration with the legendary rodents themselves. Actor Dave Coulier's 1980s "Cartoons Christmas" is a rare find. Stan Freberg's "Christmas Dragnet," Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and his Old Lady" and Basil Rathbone's radiant reading of "The Night Before Christmas" help to make the season right. Dec 24, 2006

CHRISTMAS, 06 #3:Our seasonal festivities roll on with a hilarious mix of Christmas and Hanukkah songs. Tom Lehrer, Adam Sandler and Gefilte Joe and the Fish light Menorah candles, while "Weird Al" Yankovic, Albert Brooks and Chuck Pickleshimer help Dr. D trim the tree. Holiday spirit and holiday spirits are celebrated and satirized in songs like "The Night Santa Went Crazy" (the extra gory version), "Chipmunks Roasting On An Open Fire" and "I'm Spending Hanukkah In Santa Monica."
